10 Ways to Relax

Feeling stressed out?

  1. Close your eyes and take 10 breaths, slowly inhaling through your nose and exhaling through your mouth.
  2. While sitting, lace your fingers together over your head, and stretch with palms facing up for 20 seconds.  Extend your legs out in front of you and alternately flex and point your feet for 10 seconds.
  3. Take a short walk- and breathe deeply.
  4. Laugh- keep a book of jokes with in reach, and post some favorite cartoons nearby.
  5. Talk things over with a friend or counselor.
  6. Have a cup of tea or a favorite non-alcoholic beverage.  Sip it slowly.
  7. Visualize yourself in a pleasant scene- lounging in a mountain meadow, relaxing at the beach, or swinging in a hammock.
  8. Pause to enjoy a healthy snack, such as an apple or some raw nuts.
  9. Give yourself a massage- rub your temples, shoulders, and the back of your neck.
  10. Turn on some soothing music.
