Direct Service Volunteers

  • Direct service volunteers must be 18 years of age or older, able to pass a DCFS background check, and a criminal background check.
  • They Perform crisis interventions for both adult and children victims of sexual assault at local hospitals, police, and sheriff departments.
  • They handle crisis hotline phone calls from victims of sexual assault.
  • Serve as translators to speak of Spanish, American Sign Language, and others. We make every effort to provide services to survivors in their native language. We ask that translators be native speakers themselves and complete a portion of our volunteer training.

Direct service volunteers are required to complete a minimum of 40 hours of training and earn certification for crisis intervention by the Illinois Coalition Against Sexual Assault. Training is free and is offered every fall.

 Types of Direct Service Volunteers

  •  Medical Advocacy
    Respond to local hospitals and police departments when a sexual assault survivor is present.
  •  Community Education Programming
    Convey personal safety information through classroom with children in local schools.
  • Support Line Advocacy
    Provides emotional support and information to survivors and their loved one over the telephone.
  • Court Advocacy
    Attend legal proceedings of sexual assault cases in the local county courts.

Non-Direct Service Volunteers

  • Perform clerical and organizational tasks
  • Help with fundraising events such as Zumbafest and Walk a Mile in her Shoes.
  • Participates in awareness programs like resource fairs.

 Development and Administration Volunteers

  • Administrative
    We need administrative volunteers to help get all our jobs done. We can work with together towards creating a community free from sexual violence
  •  Events
    Events are crucial components to not only fundraising efforts, but also to engage the community in the work we do through spreading awareness about the prevalence of sexual assault and abuse. You can help out our development team with events, and we need volunteers for both leading up to events and for day-of responsibilities.

    Some events volunteers can help with are Take Back the Night, Walk a Mile in Her Shoes, Zumbafest, and other fundraising events.
